Welcome
to
Garden Terrace Garden Terrace is OMNI's
newest long-term care home in the new downtown core
of Kanata. The home opened January 2003. Garden Terrace
was built to the Ministry of Health's newest design
standards. The home incorporates a courtyard design
and captures the essence of home.
The 5 storey building is home to 160
residents with 40 wards (2 residents per room) and 80
private rooms; 6 beds will be designated as respite/temporary
beds.
Each floor has 2 neighbourhoods with
16 residents living in each neighbourhood. The first
two floors are secured living areas for residents with
special needs. Floors 3, 4 and 5 offer a cross section
of care for residents who are physically frail or have
mild cognitive impairment.
Each neighbourhood has its own domestic
kitchen whre parts of the daily meals will be prepared
and residents and their families may cook together.
The family dining and activity rooms with harvest tables
ensure residents who cannot easily leave the home have
opportuities to participate in their family celebrations
and gatherings. A sunroom, family room, living room
and access to an outdoor terrace in each neighbourhood
provides quiet spaces for intimate gatherings.
The interior layout of each neighbourhood
incorporates a natural path that guides the wandering
resident back to destinations and points of interest
that will encourage social interaction and help maintain
independence and purposeful mobility. The design incorporates
extensive use of memory triggers to assist in way finding.
The materials, colours and light levels were chosen
to maximize a sense of home and quality of living while
minimizing environmental challenges for residents living
with dementia and physical challenges relating to aging
and illness.
The main entrance of the building is
decorated with a warm, wood trimmed lobby featuring
a fireplace surrounded by two storeys of windows looking
out onto a lush secured courtyard with outdoor seating,
trees, shrubbery and assorted flower gardens.
Our courtyard allows safe, independent
access to the outdoors, creating an interaction between
indoor and outdoor living spaces, and creating a physical
environment that minimizes challenges and optimizes
function for our residents living with physical and
cognitive challenges.

What makes a home? For some, home is defined by
its size, stature, interior-designed rooms and lavish
belongings. For others, home is somewhat of a modest,
cozy accommodation. Editorial
