Car show a drive down memory laneResidents reminisce during annual event that sparks memories, enhances community connectionsAugust 16, 2012The sights and sounds of classic cars brought back memories for Riverview Manor residents on Aug. 7, when a group of Peterborough car enthusiasts brought their hot rods by as part of an annual event that highlights the home’s connection to the community. Sonia Murney, the home’s acting life enrichment co-ordinator, says about 15 cars including a 1963 Corvette, a 1932 Model A Ford and a 1932 Ford coupe with a rumble seat, stopped in. “The Ford coupe was the big talk; the residents all loved that one,” she tells the OMNIway, adding one resident recalled how his brother had owned the same car and he remembered riding in the rumble seat when he was four years old. Another resident once owned the exact model of one of the cars on display, so the owner encouraged her to get inside and sit in the driver’s seat. Even a week after the event, some residents are still talking about how much fun they had checking out the cars and sharing their memories, says Murney. Staff members made sure lots of photos of residents with the cars were taken. The photos were then printed and posted in a common area of the home. Residents continue to stop in the hallway in front of the photo collage to discuss the event, says Murney. “This has brought back great memories and it’s something that they talk about all the time in their groups, too,” she says. Murney is also tipping her hat to the car club for taking the time to bring their fancy wheels to the home. Their dedication to Riverview Manor and the community is outstanding, she says. “They were phenomenal with the residents.” If you have a story you would like to share with the OMNIway, please contact the newsroom at 800-294-0051, ext. 23, or e-mail deron(at)axiomnews.ca.
