Assessments provide OMNI with outsiders’ view
Accreditation process brings awareness to strengths and areas of improvement

During the first week of March surveyors from the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA) visited 16 of OMNI Health Care’s 17 long-term care homes as the first step in the company’s path to receiving corporate accreditation.

The purpose of accreditation is to ensure that organizations continuously evaluate, improve and report their success and growth.

But the accreditation also provides organizations with another set of eyes to provide insight into areas that might be challenging for those working from within a company to see.

From the process, OMNI’s long-term care homes are now looking at ways to continually improve themselves to bring the more than 1,400 residents in its 17 homes the best possible quality of care.

In this sense, OMNI’s goal of becoming CCHSA accredited is another example of the organization’s vision of demonstrating “what is possible with knowledge, love, support and understanding.”

Rosebridge Manor, for instance, discovered through the accreditation process that it needed to engage its family members in education sessions so they can be a part of residents’ care. As a result, the Jasper long-term care home plans to utilize its newsletter to advertise educational in-services to families.

Through the accreditation process, staff members at Burnbrae Gardens in Campbellford discovered that by turning family council meetings into social events they could build and maintain membership.

Staff members at Village Green felt the surveyors reinforced to everyone that they had excellent systems and policies in effect, and that the assessment served as an opportunity to enhance this understanding.

While each of OMNI’s homes has been independently accredited in the past, this is the first time the company has sought corporate accreditation.

“At the end of the day, we want to show that we’re consistent in our homes; that we actually have common practices and best practices, and that we work as a team for all of our efforts,” Shawn Riel, OMNI’s regional director, told the OMNIway in February.

There’s nothing wrong with saying you need to improve yourself in some areas as a company or organization. Continuously striving for improvement staves off complacency and ensures that organizations are always on the lookout for best practices.
