Rosebridge steps up its pet therapy

Rosebridge Manor residents are making way for ‘Piglet,’ a new companion to soon move into the Jasper long-term care home.

The bright orange, affectionate female Guinea pig, chosen by Guinea-pig fan and director of care (DOC) Nancy Unsworth, is almost ready to reside permanently at Rosebridge complete with her bamboo hut.

Unsworth has been tending to Piglet at home, selecting her as a pet she thought would be suitable for the long-term care home. She is already a hit with one resident in particular, Marty Stubbs, who has spent some time bonding with the large rodent.

“Even the residents who don’t talk just light up” when they see Piglet, says Unsworth.

“They really like her. There were some very common comments — she’s so warm, she’s so soft, she’s so beautiful.” Guinea pigs make good pets, says the DOC. “They’re really interactive.” She says she selected Piglet based on the fact this particular Guinea pig seemed to like affection.

She’s being introduced as part of Rosebridge’s pet therapy program. Residents have become accustomed to and enjoyed visits from Cody, a black lab, owned by registered nurse Donna Bennett. Bennett brings Cody to work with her and residents have watched her grow through the puppy stages.

Unsworth says there are benefits to having animals around and pet therapy in general.

“Animals are unconditional love, in both ways, you for the animal and them for you. They sense the compassion in you.”

Since Stubbs has already bonded with Piglet, he’s volunteered to assist with her care needs once she moves into the home.
