Riverview Manor honours
its veterans
Monday, November
13, 2006 -- Natalie Miller
Riverview Manor in Peterborough paid tribute to
its veterans with a ceremony to mark Remembrance
Day at the long-term care home.
“Each year at this time, our
home honours all the veterans who served their
country for the freedom of us all,” says
Rosemary Lustic, a Riverview Manor employee.
Involvement from all departments
in addition to participation from residents, family
members, volunteers and members of the community
made this year’s service possible, says
Rosemary. An ‘Order of Service’ is
prepared prior to the service which includes
prayers, hymns and poems depicting all areas of
military service.
For the past number of years, Retired
Corporal Darrel J. Lustic who served and represents
the Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment, has
co-ordinated the Remembrance Day service. All
staff, residents, participants and guests receive
a poppy prior to the commencement of the service.
Also, each year, one or more residents
lay a wreath on behalf of Riverview. This year’s
chosen veteran was Charles (Bud) Lavelle. Riverview
has six veterans residing at the Water Street
nursing home.
“This is also an excellent
way for our residents to display their medals
and if inclined, say a few words on behalf of
all those who laid down their lives so many years
ago,” says Rosemary.
“Clergy play a large part
in making the service more memorable. Their expertise
is much needed and appreciated especially on this
most important occasion,” she says.
”This program marks a significant
reminiscing of days gone by sparking happy memories
and some sad ones; but most importantly signifies
that we as a whole will never forget.”
