Almonte solving lost clothing
problem

Almonte Country Haven has
discovered a way to solve the unclaimed clothing
dilemma.
A new machine that creates labels is being
put to use in environmental services. Clear
labels bearing residents’ names are
pressed on to clothing, helping ensure the
items make their way back to residents’
rooms instead of being destined for the lost-and-found
clothing rack. Previously, names were written
on the clothing in a fabric marker which wasn’t
as efficient, says Darlene Thibault, life
enrichment co-ordinator at the Almonte long-term
care home.
“One of our biggest issues when a resident
first comes in is getting their clothes labeled,”
says Darlene.
“The labeling when they first come
in is an important thing.” Lost clothing
is an expense to the residents’ families,
she says.
She says the lost clothing rack is full of
items for family members or residents to peruse.
The purchase of the label maker was made
possible because of a $5,000 donation to the
home from resident Helen Smith.
The machine, which resembles a heavy-duty
iron, cost about $2,000.
“We were thinking of purchasing something
that was beneficial to the majority of the
residents,” says Darlene.
“It’s certainly a savings for
a family” too.
