Volunteers
key to successful programming: Barr

At Rosebridge Manor, regular volunteers have
been instrumental in getting residents involved
in programming and special activities, says
Kathy Barr, life enrichment coordinator.
“They’re so helpful,” says
Kathy, of the home’s four most consistent
volunteers – Kathleen Empey, Cora Burtchall,
Dianne Lockett, and Veronica Ireland.
Veronica is the newest of the four, joining
the home three months ago. Kathleen Empey
has been with Rosebridge for twenty-five years,
while Cora, Kathleen’s closest friend,
is also a long-serving member, having served
for fifteen years. Dianne Lockett has regularly
hosted residents in her own home for special
meals over the last five years. She also runs
the home’s popular bingo program.
The four recently assisted Kathy in holding
the home’s annual Bazaar – a bake/craft
sale, one of the home’s largest yearly
events. Over one-hundred family members, friends
and Jasper residents attended the fundraising
event, which netted more than $250 for the
resident’s council.
“Our volunteers are instrumental in
getting residents involved in activities,”
says Kathy.
“They love the residents and in turn
know they are appreciated. They’re just
like part of the family.”
Kathy adds that many of the items sold at
the “White Elephant” table were
donated by volunteers, their family and friends.
Volunteers also helped to bake the cookies,
muffins and other treats sold at the Bazaar.
Apart from their tireless efforts in cooking,
baking, and craft construction, volunteers
are important for the home because of their
positive approach and contagious, upbeat spirit.
“It’s the way they encourage
the residents, and help get them to the birthday
parties and events. And they come in consistently,”
she says.
