Don Cherry stayed home but residents clustered to watch the hockey action
from their warm seats behind the glass on this brisk winter day.
Canada’s game was on display for about 50 residents of
Garden Terrace in Kanata, who peered through the glass of the large windows
in the main floor living room, as well as from their rooms.
Life Enrichment Co-ordinator Jeff Bedley donned the goaltending
gear while staff at Garden Terrace lined up to take shots on the as the
home’s staff and residents celebrated "Hockey Night in Kanata,"
says Administrator Karl Samuelson.
In addition to Karl and Jeff, many staff members were present
but chose to observe. Two other staff were active, lively participants,
Shelley Johnson, a registered practical nurse, and president of the CAW
Local, and Rachel Paquette, a life enrichment aide.
"Our goal is to celebrate the OMNIway, especially
the part dealing with fun and laughter,"says Karl.
"We created a hockey rink atmosphere with the courtyard
acting as an enclosed space and the residents all watching from the warm
comfort of their rooms and café area. It was cold but that didn’t
stop the enthusiasm."
Although the event was fun, it did take on a more serious side when Jeff,
active in recreation hockey in Ottawa, challenged Karl with the statement,
"Do you think you can get one past me old guy?"
Karl proceeded to show that although he hasn’t played
competitively "since a major leg injury ended (a) promising career,"
he showed the younger player that he still had a few tricks up his sleeve.
"Karl gave me a run for the money but I managed to fight off a few
of his shots," says Jeff.
