The gardens at Streamway Villa are in full bloom because
of the tender loving care the plants have received from
staff, family members and residents of the Cobourg long-term
care home, says Denise Ansell.
The Streamway community was recently rewarded with
the blossoming of a “perfect” pink rose
lately, says the life enrichment co-ordinator.
Denise notes gardening is an important component of
the Streamway community.
“It’s what we’re known for,”
she says.
“It’s gorgeous, it really is. Basically
the whole building is surrounded in some form of plant
life.” She adds maple trees provide a canopy.
Denise says residents who are interested in gardening
take part, from watering to supervising planting. Over
the years, a variety of family members have taken on
the gardening, while others bring in plants from home
or from residents’ former homes for Streamway’s
beds.
Denise says she encourages family members to plant
flowers, trees or shrubs in honour of their loved ones.
“It’s really a family project,” says
Denise about the gardens. “It gets passed on from
family members.” Denise says she is beginning
to develop a bit of a green thumb herself.
She credits family member Brenda Meddick, restorative
care aide Lynette Sandercock and Streamway friend Helen
Stewart “for all their hard work.”
