Daubney
back on her feet

Barb Daubney says that a year ago she never
dreamed she would be walking again, much less
dancing. But at a Christmas party recently the
Kentwood Park resident was up "cutting a
rug" with the rest of the crowd.
"She was up dancing and kicking up her heels,"
says Jill Turney, the life enrichment co-ordinator
at the Picton long-term care home.
"We could only hope at this time last year
that this would one day become a reality."
In December 2003 Barb used a wheelchair to move
around the long-term care home. She could not
walk at all, not even bear her own weight.
After a thorough assessment, the restorative
care team at Kentwood began regular range of motion
exercises with Barb. They also started her on
a standing and muscle-strengthening program.
"Barb was very determined," says Jill.
"She did the exercises daily."
As she continued the programs, Barb's strength
and ability to use her feet and legs improved.
She was cheered on daily not only by the restorative
care team but all the staff at the home. "Everyone
gave her great encouragement," says Jill.
Eventually Barb was able to walk independently
with the aid of a wheeled walker.
The staff members are very proud of Barb and
her determination, says Jill. She and her family
are also "tickled pink" at her tremendous
progress.
"She goes out daily with a friend of hers
and is proud as punch," says Jill.
The life enrichment co-ordinator attributes Barb's
success first and foremost to her hard work and
dedication.
"It was also the encouragement and determination
of all the staff that made this happen,"
she says.
Barb agrees. "If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't
be where I am," she says.
