Editorial
To Oprah, with
Grace
September 17, 2003
The world is full of wishes, often made by good people. Wishes that
come true are a complex synthesis of reward, hope and enduring faith.
And while that might be true, more than anything a wish can come true
when a single person acts as a catalyst to make the wish a reality.
A few weeks ago, an 80-year old resident named Grace Patterson dropped
a wish into a wooden wishing well at Pleasant Meadow Manor in Norwood.
She wanted to meet Oprah Winfrey. In this case, then, the catalyst
for the wish coming true can be none other than Oprah herself.
It probably need not be said who Oprah is, the daytime talk-show icon
who would eschew such a title herself. But she is the queen of television,
an award-winning actress and a grand connector between people and their
individual life purpose. She is a facilitator of the meaningful path
so many of us want to walk.
OMNI Health Care has something
in common with Oprah. It decided some time ago that ‘hope, purpose
and belonging’ were
not only distant goals for an organization dedicated to caring, but
rather
the foundation itself. OMNI is about cultivating meaningful lives for
people, no matter their age, from a long-term care perspective.
Oprah chose the way of the communicator to find hope and purpose both
for her and for others, with an unrelenting motivation to express humanitarian
ideals to as many people as possible in the world.
OMNI has chosen the way of the caregiver, with an unyielding focus
to care for residents and provide for them a sense of inner peace and
contentment.
Long ago, Oprah realized she had a destiny inextricably linked with
healing others. She refocused her show in 1994 to be consistently about
meaningful subjects and has always demonstrated an unerring capacity
for goodness.
Grace Patterson must sense this. She puts her life
on hold when Oprah appears on her television each day, no matter
what is going on around
her. At 80 years old, Oprah has become a fixture in the life of this
resident. It bears repeating that Grace’s wish can only be activated
by the grace of Oprah at this point in time.
Wishes are important indeed. Perhaps they are a quiet affirmation
of our faith, a small sign that, should they come true, the way we
think the world works might just be right after all.
