Campaign success
and multidose dialogue
March
14, 2003
This week two themes dominated the OMNIway News -the OLTCA
campaign, and the ups and downs of implementing the multidose medication
system
across
the OMNI community.
Both storylines point to real live examples of how
OMNI’s
principles translate into action.
OMNI’s ability to mobilize staff and family members
to raise a voice for residents set the pace for Ontario’s long-term
care community. Ontario Long Term Care Association Members account
for 45,000 of Ontario’s beds. Of those, OMNI represents only
3.5 per cent. Yet, OMNI rallied 20 per cent of the cards gathered
in support of this important campaign for appropriate funding.
While the effects of raising a voice again has yet to be seen, something
else has happened.
The mobilization of this year’s campaign was markedly easier
than last year, and in OMNI’s case, significantly more successful.
Last year the OMNI community raised over 6,000 cards. That number
doubled this year – why?
Last year’s campaign bumped up the knowledge
people possess about the issues. The statistics floated during
that campaign still
come up in casual conversation. It taught people how to campaign.
This year OMNI leveraged that understanding of both issues and process
into even greater success.
The long-term care community, including family members,
now has a more powerful voice, built on a more broadly held knowledge
base.
The OMNI community recognized this and refused to squander its potential.
The second main storyline this week was the implementation
of the multidose system. It is clear by the news stories that all
is not
peaches and cream when it comes to implementing this new way of doing
things. The truth is, few new initiatives are glitch-free.
Homes that are deep into the implementation stages spoke freely
about the challenges they encountered with the system, how they managed
those challenges, and what the results were in the long run.
The concerns of OMNI homes yet to implement the system
have been given
legitimacy by the experience of their colleagues.
Further to this, it is clear that because others have
gone before them, OMNI does have at its disposal people who have
valuable experience
that may be of use.
The way this story is unfolding tells us something about OMNI as
well.
Having been published in the OMNIway News for
the whole world to see, the multidose storyline demonstrates OMNI’s
willingness to be open, honest and transparent about working through
challenges.
The net effect is that issues and knowledge are
out in the open where everyone who can help is presented with a
public opportunity
to do just that. What’s more, because the knowledge is published,
people implementing the system in the future can read up on the experiences
of others.
It also signals that at OMNI, it is increasingly expected
challenges should be embraced. There are opportunities to pull together
and find better
ways, rather than sweep things under the carpet.
The campaign storyline paints the picture of OMNI as a
long-term care community that has shown leadership in being a voice
for residents.
The multidose dialogue illustrates the emerging character
of OMNI as it embraces open dialogue in order to safeguard the interests
of residents
during the effort to find a better way.
These are but two of the ways in which OMNI is demonstrating
Leadership, Transparency, and Social Responsibility, all traits
increasingly
desired of today’s organizations.
