Christmas Trivia creates festive buzz at Rosebridge

What was the name of Scrooge’s clerk? Who thought the Grinch was Santa Claus? What was Brenda Lee’s Christmas hit song?

These kinds of questions are getting Rosebridge Manor staff members thinking – and into the festive mood.

Every weekday from Nov. 24 to Dec. 24, staff members are voluntarily participating in a Christmas Trivia Contest, an idea that came from the Jasper home’s Director of Care, Karen Bajinski.

She has a Christmas trivia game at home, and has been drawing the questions from there. “I thought it would be a good way for staff to have fun and get into the spirit of Christmas,” she says.

Each day, from Monday to Friday, a different Christmas trivia question is posted on the board in the main foyer. Staff members write down their answers and put them in a box at the front desk, and every day at noon, a winner is drawn. As Karen explains, the first name drawn that has the correct answer is the daily winner. Each winner receives a small prize, such as a Christmas candle or snow globe.

“It’s a lot of fun and we’ve had a wonderful response,” she says, noting about 12 to 15 staff members submit answers each day.

The game is definitely causing a lot of buzz around the home, says Heath Heffernan, a registered nurse and supportive measures specialist. “One of the first things people do when they get here is go look at the board” to see what the question of the day is. “Then there is all kinds of talking, ‘What do you think it is? What do you think it is?’ It’s definitely causing a positive stir and getting people excited.”

And, as Karen notes, that excitement is spreading throughout the home.

“It’s supposed to be for staff, but they end up getting residents into it too – they end up asking them the questions. So, really, everyone here is having fun with it,” she says.

Heath recently won a prize – a Christmas candy dish – by correctly answering the question: What Christmas carol has the words “in thy deep and dreamless sleep?”

The answer? Little Town of Bethlehem. “I had to hum it a bit before I figured it out,” laughs Heath.

Oh, and in case you were wondering: Bob Cratchitt was Scrooge’s clerk, Cindy Lou Who thought the Grinch was Santa, and Brenda Lee’s Christmas song was ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.’
